On the 18th of January we celebrated the New Year 2019 at DIA-drasis: Child Center for the Development of Social Skills with all of you that support and participate in this program! We were all there… children and parents, refugees or local community, teachers and volunteers of DIA-drasis, friends and associates!
Of course, it was an honour to have at our event the Head of the Refugee Committee of YMCA, Ioannis Vouharas, the Head of YMCA Thessaloniki Social Action, Aristi Tzoni and our guests from the YMCA folk-dance group (Λαογραφικός Χορευτικός Όμιλος ΧΑΝΘ) and especially the dance instructor, Dimitris Domvris! Last, but not least, our project manager Paola Seremetis from the Major Development Agency of Thessaloniki (Μητροπολιτική Αναπτυξιακή Θεσσαλονίκης), lead partner of the project “Enhancing the right to education and access to schooling for refugee children”.
Our fest began with the Greek custom of “Vasilopita” (or the king’s pie), a big cake in which a small coin is hidden inside. The cake is cut into pieces and everyone takes one… the one who finds the coin is the lucky one this new year! The coin is a symbol of good fortune! Then the tradition involves music and dance! The YMCA folk-dance group introduced us to some traditional Greek dances and then Kurdish, Iranian, Afghan, Turkish and so more traditional dances took place. Grown-ups and little ones participated with all their heart!
Happy New Year to ALL!!!
